Plot

Mary Jane Watson-Parker sure has a lot on her plate. She’s a wife, mother, business owner, and oh yeah did I forget to mention that she’s also a superhero? If you thought your mom was awesome wait until you get a look at this spectacular spider mom. Peter may be a veteran superhero but even the amazing spider-man needs help juggling raising a kid and beating up baddies, and Mary Jane is the perfect woman to be by his side. She can kick butt, take names, and most importantly she can keep both Annie and Peter in check.

Story

This issue is mainly focused on MJ. You get to really see what makes her tick. Long time Spider-Man fans know that MJ is Peter’s rock, but we rarely ever got to see thing from her perspective. Conway has MJ’s voice down pact. Peter’s main focus has always been about responsibility to the point where it overwhelms him. MJ has always been the one to balance him out. She helps him pull back and realize when he’s worrying too much. She’s his partner. Everything they do they do as a team, and now that Peter was able to take Regent’s tech to give his wife spider powers the whole Parker family can now join in on the crime fighting business. MJ’s a natural, because just as she says herself whenever she sees something that needs doing she just jumps in and does it. That of course includes jumping in and stopping two but crocks.

Of course MJ’s life isn’t just limited to her time in the costume. She’s also a business owner and fashion blogger. At first it seemed like her husband’s Parker luck was rubbing off on her. They over ordered and the rent on their store just went up. Luckily MJ has always been known to make her own luck. Her blog has been getting some big attention. This may be enough to turn things around unfortunately MJ has to cut her celebration short when she sees that the Mole Man is attacking the city. Peter needs her help and after all a wife’s work is never done.

MJ swings into action ready to kick some mole people butt. This is where we discover that MJ’s spider suit interferes with Peter’s powers when he and MJ uses their abilities in the same place at the same time. This causes the mole people the upper hand. It’s too bad that they made a mistake that may end up being their downfall. What was this massive mistake? They threatened Annie and managed to piss off MJ. If you thought the Hulk’s anger was a problem just wait until you see an angry spider powered mom. I actually feel bad for the mole people.

Art

Ryan Stegman’s art is amazing, pun totally intended. It’s great. Somehow this art has a classic vibe to it while still looking very clean and modern. It’s extremely detailed. The colors pop adding even more to the overall fun tone of the issue. All the facial expressions are on point. This also transfers over to the character designs. This series is the first time fans get to see Ryan Stegman draw the classic red and blue suit, and as a lifelong Spider-Man fan I have to say I love it. MJ and Annie’s suits are also great. Stegman also does a wonderful job at capturing bombastic dynamic action scenes. My favorite has to be this shot of the Parker family all in costume.

Verdict

Gerry Conway is a veteran spider-man writer and even though it’s been a while since he’s written adventures for Peter Parker you could not tell at all while reading this issue. This man has not missed a single beat. This has a lot of the love and fun that some fans say that the main Amazing Spider-Man series is missing. If your a fan of classic spider-man or miss Peter and MJ together as a couple then I definitely recommend that you pick up The Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #3 if you haven’t already.
