Earlier today, Entertainment Weekly exclusively reported more details on Sigourney Weaver’s much anticipated role in Netflix’s Defenders.
When Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Danny Rand (Finn Jones) come together later this year, it is Sigourney Weaver’s Alexandra that they are joining forces against.
Sigourney Weaver is best known for her tough as nails performances in action thrillers such as the Alien series, and it sounds like she will be continuing that tradition in Defenders. As showrunner Marco Ramirez told EW, she’s an “utter badass” in the role of Alexandra. He went on to describe her in even more glowing terms, ramping up everyone’s desire to see her in action:
“Sigourney is the kind of person you can buy as the smartest person in the room, who you can also buy as a person holding a flamethrower. Her character is a very powerful force in New York City. She’s everything Sigourney is: sophisticated, intellectual, dangerous.”
While neither Marvel nor Netflix have released any further details about her character, this is already a lot more information than was previously released. It seems evident that Alexandra is a brand new villain, free from the shackles of comic book history and lore. But in order to be a match for the likes of Darevil and his Netflix cohorts, she must be as Machiavellian as Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) who came before her.
And while she may be an original character, that doesn’t mean that the organization she works for or the goal she has in mind won’t be straight from the pages of a Marvel book. After all, this is the first time the world will see the Defenders team in action, so the threat is bound to be epic. As Ramirez explained in his interview, “We knew it would take something massive to pull these four characters from their individual worlds to work together, but also small enough that it felt like it existed in our world.”
Sounds like a tough line to walk, but Netflix hasn’t let us down yet! In addition to Sigourney’s role, Netflix also announced that the series is set for a summer 2017 release.
