Inhumans Profile: Crystal Amaquelin & Lockjaw!
Marvel’s Inhumans was originally slated to be a movie with a release date of November 2, 2018, but with the Inhumans presence on the small screen via Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Marvel decided to cut it from their slate of movies and instead create a TV series around the Royal Family on ABC. To help prepare you for this event we have been running down the principle cast and allowing you get to know them from comics to TV. Today I am giving you a double dose of an Inhumans Profile with Crystal Amaquelin and her trusted canine Lockjaw.
Crystal Amaquelin was created by Stan “The Man” Lee and Jack Kirby in December 1965 within the pages of Fantastic Four #45. Crystal is the Princess of the Royal Family of the Inhumans, Queen Medusa’s sister and the youngest member of the royal family. Upon going through Terrigenesis she gained the ability to psionically control the classic four elements, and by extension other natural minerals and phenomenon such as metals and electricity. Crystal also has the distinction of being the first character to be identified as Inhuman.
Inhuman, Avenger, a member of the Fantastic Four and ties to the X-Men Crystal has a long history within the Marvel Universe. She was the first character outside of the First Family of Marvel to serve as a member of the Fantastic Four when she took the place of Sue Richards the Invisible Woman while she was pregnant with her first child Franklin Richards. She and Johnny Storm, the Human Torch were instantly love struck since her first appearance and throughout the years have had an on again off again love affair.
Despite her love for Johnny, Crystal has had other relationships, but none that rivaled the bond they shared like that of Pietro Maximoff, Quicksilver. After her time as a member of the Fantastic Four Crystal returned to Attilan and the Inhumans. During this time she met and fell in love with Pietro and the two were married and conceived a child, a daughter named Luna. Even though they loved each other and shared a daughter an affair (mind controlled by Maximus) with a man led to the downfall of their marriage.
After the events of Infinity where King Black Bolt released a Terrigen Bomb Crystal lead a team that was comprised by mainly of NuHumans (Inhumans transformed due to the Terrigen Bomb). Along with Gorgon, they travelled the world to gather and protect the NuHumans as they emerged from their cocoons. Following the events of Inhumans Vs X-Men Crystal will depart the planet to space with the rest of the Royal Family in the new series Royals.
Like Crystal and Lockjaw was created by Stan “The Man” Lee and Jack Kirby in December 1965 within the pages of Fantastic Four #45. Lockjaw is the loyal companion of Crystal that resembles a giant bulldog. He possess the ability to teleport as as so serves as the Inhumans teleporter. Due to a joke played on the Thing by Karnak and Gorgon Quicksilver believed that Lockjaw was a sentient person transformed by Terrigenesis which led him to keep his daughter Luna from undergoing the procedure.
Both Crystal and Lockjaw have appeared numerous times in various animated series, and video games, with Marvel’s Inhumans marking their first live action appearance. Lockjaw will have to be a CGI creation, while Crystal will be portrayed by Isabelle Cornish (Home and Away, Puberty Blues). I hope that they capture the love and loyalty of Lockjaw, even though he is a giant dog, artist over the years have helped endear him to us by making him expressive. I hope this is something that the CGI animators can capture.
The casting describes her Impetuous and independent, she is also deeply devoted to her family. These are qualities that she shares with her comic counterpart. Isabelle Cornish is relatively new and hasn’t had many roles, so I don’t know much about her as an actress. I hope that the show uses this fact to show the innocence of Crystal. With Crystal being the youngest of the Royal Family I expect them to use her as that bridge between the Inhuman Royal Family, the other Inhumans, humans and us the viewers. Her youth and curiosity along with her teleporting canine will make for great chances to explore both worlds through her eyes.
