Star Wars Celebration 2017 is in full swing in Orlando, Florida and with it comes lots of exciting news. One piece of information that concerns Marvel fans is the announcement of a new comic series based around the character of Captain Phasma, played by Gwendoline Christie in the films. Star Wars: Captain Phasma will be a four issue miniseries set after Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It will be written by Kelly Thompson (Hawkeye, A-Force) with art by Marco Checchetto (Spider-Man, Punisher, Daredevil). The first issue is set for release in September.
Captain Phasma is part of The Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a series of books and comics to prepare fans for the new film. A similar project was started before The Force Awakens which included the Star Wars: Shattered Empire comics written by George Rucka with art again by Marco Checchetto. Other titles included in The Journey to The Last Jedi are The Legend of Luke Skywalker by Ken Liu, a novel about the young Princess Leia by Claudia Grey (Bloodline, Lost Stars), and Phasma by Delilah Dawson.
Last time we saw Captain Phasma she was sent to the trash compactor by Finn (John Boyega). It looks like this comic series will help explain how she got off Starkiller Base and lived to fight for the First Order another day. It will be nice to see more of her character, especially since The Force Awakens offered little more than a tease of the type of villain she could be. Thompson said she’s a big fan of the character and that Phasma has, “So much fascinating untapped potential… potential which I can’t wait to help unlock for fans in our comic.”
