The news came via Nerdist that Spider-Man has new abilities in Spider-Man: Homecoming and more. Nerdist took a set visit to Atlanta for the film where they learned a lot of awesome things about the upcoming film. They learned about the new abilities Spider-Man will have and more!
The suit that Tony Stark made for him in Captain America: Civil was more of a training tool suit, that didn’t allow Peter to access his full abilities. Peter will break the protocol lock on on the suit to access everything that he and the suit can do. There’s a few things that were kept quiet from the cast and crew, but these are new a couple of the new things that Spider-Man will be able to do: holographic interfaces, and parachutes.
Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) told the Nerdist how he felt about the new abilities:
“I’m definitely excited for you guys to see stuff that Spider-Man has never done before.”
Tony Stark will, of course, take the suit back after Peter has displayed some reckless behavior due to breaking the protocol on the suit. This is will lead Peter to go back to his DIY suit.
Diversity Of The Film & Color Blind Casting
The director, Jon Watts also commented on the diversity of the film:
“I lived in New York for thirteen years and it should look like a school in New York. It shouldn’t look like a school in the Midwest in the 50s. So I pulled a bunch of pictures of kids and documentary photos of kids in schools, and that was part of my pitch and everyone was really into that and followed through with the casting, which is so, so cool, I love the kids.”
Diversity has been a huge hot button topic, and it’s nice seeing more superhero and action films in general acknowledge that this is the world we live in and are reflecting that in their work.
“It was colorblind initially because it was everyone, like any kid ever. We just put them on tape…and it was an opportunity to be like, ‘Well this kid is great, we don’t have a specific role for them. But maybe we should create a small role for them or think of a way to incorporate them in some other capacity.’ When you’re developing the story and the script while you’re casting, you can keep an open mind to look for the best kids. That’s what they did”- Watts on auditions.
Zendaya, a biracial actress and singer, will play Michelle. Laura Harrier, who is also a biracial actress, is playing Liz Allen. Tony Revolori, a Latino actor, is playing Flash Thompson, and Jacob Batalon (Filipino-American) will play Ned Leeds who is Peter’s best friend.
More Fun
The film will also focus on more fun than responsibility this time around with the Spider-Man franchise.
“It’s difficult not to take influence from Tobey and Andrew because they both had such great versions of the character. I think from Tobey I’m taking his sort of less cool side of things, whereas Andrew was very cool and very sort of contained. But then with Andrew, I thought his Spider-Man was fantastic. I thought when he was in that suit, I thought he really came to life, and so there are two things I am taking from both people. For me it’s just making sure I feel like a kid on set. Really be the kid that everyone wants to be, and just have fun with it, and see a superhero really enjoy having his powers.” – Tom Holland
We don’t know about you, but this seems like a totally awesome approach for a Spider-Man film!
