Marvel has canceled Black Panther and The Crew after just two issues, according to an interview with Ta-Nehisi Coates published on The Verge.
Coates told The Verge that the decision was made due to poor sales. Fortunately for fans, Black Panther and The Crew will continue to publish through #6 which will allow writers Coates and Yona Harvey to wrap up the first planned arc. Pencillers Butch Guice and Mack Chater and colorist Dan Brown also work on the book.
In addition to allowing readers to see a team up between fan favorites like Storm and Misty Knight, the book also looks at real life issues including police brutality after the mysterious death of local activist Ezra Keith.
In his interview, Coates told the Verge Black Panther and The Crew was not meant to be political.
“The Crew was an opportunity to get inside them as black people,” Coates said of the characters.
The Crew was the second spin-off to come from Coates’ recent run of Black Panther. While never officially canceled, World of Wakanda has been missing from solicits with no announced plans from Marvel to continue.
Black Panther and the Crew #3 will be published on June 14, 2017. Issues #1 and #2 are available now.
