Stranger Things Star Charlie Heaton In Talks To Join New Mutants, More Casting Rumors Circulate

The New Mutants cast is shaping up to be pretty spectacular. From Rosario Dawson who is in talks to join New Mutants as Cecelia Reyes, to Maisie Williams and Ana-Taylor Joy as Magik and Wolfsbane respectively, the cast is ramping up into something exciting. While production starts up,  Fox is continuing to add cast members.  The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Charlie Heaton is in talks to take on the role of Cannonball, a southern mutant with the ability to fire a jet like explosion that propels him through the air.

The Stranger Things star, best known for his role of town pariah Jonathan Byers, will be playing a mutant who has been taking center stage in the US Avengers comic, making his movie character interesting.  So far New Mutants has been billed as a “superhero film with an edge of Stephen King” and rumors of a complete lack of costumes as well as well known characters are circulating the internet.  It could be argued that Heaton, with a background in this sort of genre fiction would be perfect for the role.  The character, a Kentucky native, would fit in with a more relaxed cast and the actor’s background in Stranger Things will add dimension to the role.

The Stranger Things star will be joining Magik and Wolfsbane with rumors of Mirage, also known as Danielle ‘Dani’ Moonstar.  The Native-American mutant has the ability to project images into her opponents subconscious.  According to Comicbook.com, Fox is looking at two actresses, Blu Hunt and True O’Brien for the part. O’Brien did just follow members of the cast of New Mutants on social media. Director Josh Boone and Henry Zaga (rumored to be playing Sunspot) followed her back. Could it mean something?

Boone and his writing partner Knate Gwaltney are working on the script with The Fault in Our Stars writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber doing a second run-through. We’ll keep you updated with further casting as it develops.
