A Brief History Of Spider-Man In Pop Culture

1. SPIDER-MAN HOMECOMING

In February 2015, news broke that Sony, Disney, and Marvel had brokered a deal to share the rights to Peter Parker. They gave us a new Peter Parker with Tom Holland, who was first introduced in Captain America: Civil War swinging in and stealing the shield from Captain America (Chris Evans).  The internet went wild, not just because it was another Spider-Man, but because it was a Spider-Man that captured the hearts, minds, and imagination of the fans.  Peter Parker is an iconic part of the Marvel Universe. To see him on screen bantering with Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man was like seeing the comic books come to life.

Bringing Spider-Man into the MCU gives him a chance to interact with new characters. Holland is confirmed for three films and three the MCU meaning that he is sure to shape the MCU moving forward. While we don’t know how much of his rogues gallery will appear given that Venom, his greatest nemesis is about to launch his own franchise, it is nice to have the character back where he belongs.

With the 9th highest grossing film franchise in history, the wall-crawler has had quite a history. From his beginnings with the Electric Company battling vampires to Peter’s latest outing the character has made a place for himself in popular culture. Homecoming looks break box office records itself and change the shape of the MCU as we know it.

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters July 7th, 2017.
