The New Warriors are finally here! After much fan speculation (and actors pitching themselves for the role) Marvel has found their Squirrel Girl. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Milana Vayntrub, most recently seen in This Is Us, will take on the role of Doreen Green aka the girl with the power to talk to squirrels.
Doreen will lead the New Warriors, a group of ragtag relatively unknown superheroes dealing with superpowers- as well as everyday life. Joining Vayntrub as the male lead is Derek Theler (Baby Daddy) as Craig Hollis/Mr. Immortal. He possesses the power of immortality (or so he thinks). Jeremy Tardy (Dear White People) will play Dwayne Taylor/Night Thrasher, an expert martial artist with extreme intelligence. Calum Worthy (Austin & Ally) is Robbie Baldwin/Speedball, with the power to throw balls of energy. Matthew Moy (2 Broke Girls) is Zack Smith/Microbe- he can talk to germs and get all the dirt on a person. And last but not least is Kate Comer (The Comeback) as Deborah Fields/Debrii with telekinetic abilities.
New Warriors will air on Freeform and is network’s second Marvel show after Cloak and Dagger. There is no word yet on if the two shows will connect with each other or any other Marvel properties. (But remember #ItsAllConnected.)
Kevin Biegel is acting as showrunner and executive producer alongside Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of TV, and Jim Chory. Biegel is known for his previous comedy shows including Enlisted and Scrubs. He expressed his excitement at finding a cast especially as a Squirrel Girl fan himself.
“I am thrilled beyond belief to be working with this incredible group of actors. They are funny, sincere, eager, charming and perfectly embody these characters. It’ll be a blast and an honor to create this show with each of them.”
New Warriors will be Marvel’s first comedy series as they expand their television programing to other networks. The 10 episode series will air in 2018 on Freeform.
