New Marvel Legacy Resurrects The Spirits Of Vengeance

We’re big fans of Ghost Rider here at The Marvel Report, so when we saw that there was going to be a new collection of Ghost Rider comics at Marvel, we were psyched. According to Marvel.com, there’ll be a new collection of so called infernal heroes debuting under writer Victor Gischler and Artist David Baldeon.  The Spirits of Vengeance will rise October 4th in a 5 issue series that will join several new infernal riders together.  1990s comics fans might recall the first Spirits of Vengeance series, pairing Danny Ketch and Johnny Blaze together.  According to Marvel, both Gischler and Baldeon said that while this series might follow the “spirit” of the original, fans don’t need to catch up with Ketch and Blaze.  The series won’t leave 90s fans behind, but new readers won’t be left out of the loop either.

In no way are we approaching this book in a fashion that leaves out new readers. We’re looking forward. I guess it’s the best of both worlds. We’re taking some great characters who maybe haven’t gotten enough play in recent years and reintroducing them.

According to Gischler, the new series will feature Johnny Blaze, Santana, Blade, and Damien Hellstrom.  Blaze makes sense, as a character who passes on a legacy he belongs in the legacy titles.  Santana and Damien Hellstrom are both hellspawn (Damien has ties to popular Marvel character HellCat who’s recently had a resurgence in popularity thanks to the fantastic comic book run by Kate Leth and the MCU show Jessica Jones.)  Blade has worked with Ghost Rider before in the Sons of Midnight series. It’s what Gischler calls a “tight little team” and while he mentioned that there were different possibilities discussed, Gischler was confident with his team. “it’s a five issue limited series.” Gischler said, ” The best and most obvious choices are the four you mentioned.”

There’s a lot of new looks in the marvel universes, however, and artist David Baldeon seems up to tackle the challenge. Not that there’s much to do.  “I have just had fun with the original look of the character, ran with it, and tried to give it a twist.” there might be some changes, however – as well as some very interesting antagonists.e’ve dug deeper to give new versions that still are true to the character’s core. And also following that line of thought of adding and moving forward rather than going just for repetition. There’s a lot of layers there, design-wise. Oh, and the antagonists! I’m so looking forward to everyone seeing them!

It sounds incredibly exciting.  With characters who have come together before will come together again organically.   The only question left is the idea of crossovers.  Both Sons of Midnight and Spirits of Vengeance featured multiple crossovers and guest appearances.  With Marvel focusing on its Legacy titles, it would make sense if Robbie Reyes – fan favorite star of Agents of SHIELD would eventually appear.  He’s currently teamed up with Kate Bishop and Gwenpoole, but he could make a detour.   Unfortunately, Gischler says that guest appearances are currently “unlikely”.

Not at the moment, since it’s just five issues. We need to stay focused on our story and the four characters we already have to work with. But if there’s a call for more, there’s a huge potential for crossovers and other familiar faces. We’ll just have to see how it goes.  If it does well perhaps the Spirits of Vengeance will continue! Head out to your local Marvel Comic shop and tell them that you want Ghost Rider in all his forms!
