Earlier this year, Logan defied expectations at both the box office and with fans. Following a breakout performance from Dafne Keen as Laura aka X-23 in the film many wondered if we would ever see Laura again in the future. There’s been some chatter about a spin-off for the character from director James Mangold and it appears the project might actually be moving forward. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about Logan, the director confirmed that they’ve already begun work on a script.
“We’re just working on a script.”
The filmmaker believes that films like Wonder Woman will help this project get made stating the film’s success “solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist.” The director then added the following:
“The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘Well, here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming.”
While you shouldn’t get too excited yet, as this is clearly still in early stages, it’s definitely some great news to hear that the director is looking to return to the world of the X-Men following Logan. With Hugh Jackman’s Logan dying at the end of the film after helping Laura and her friends escape, could we potentially see her take up the mantle of Wolverine like the comics or could Mangold have something completely original in mind? We’re going to clearly have to wait awhile and see but for the time being let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
