2. There Are Two Different Threats To the Team’s Safety
Fans know that the Kree, the villains from Season 3 are returning. While the third season saw Brett Dalton’s Hive battling the Kree and trying to create an Inhuman paradise on earth (something that makes a lot more sense now that people have seen Inhumans.) the Kree vanished during season 4. Now that season 5 is happening, however, they’ve returned, appearing up close and personal in the trailer. Jeff Ward’s Deke says that they want only one thing “submission”.
The second critter created by Mark Kolpack and Agents of SHIELD is far more interesting. Multiple websites are speculating about it being the Brood, a race of insect-like aliens that have featured very heavily in some of the elements that Shield has borrowed to tell different stories (from John Garrett and hints of the “Zodiac” to Secret Warriors). The brood features heavily in the creation of the Red Room and the government agencies that were responsible for creating Black Widow and Natasha Romanoff.
These secondary creatures are blue however just like the Kree. The Brood, at least in the comics, are brownish red and owned by Fox. That doesn’t mean that Agents of SHIELD couldn’t debut a new weapon of the Kree who will be featuring more and more into the MCU much like their enemies the Skrulls. They could be some new creation of the Kree or an outside threat of the Kree that might end up battling them both and creating new team dynamics. The possibilities are endless.
The important thing is that the team is locked in a box with each other and these two beings, the easily defined Kree and the not-so-easily defined insect-like critters are after the team. That’s nothing compared to the biggest threat as always in the MCU. In space, you have to be worried when other people can hear you scream after all…
3. There are Other People With Them
It’s common knowledge the team isn’t alone and there are people in there who will be helping them and possibly be hindering them. Characters like Deke are billed as potential enemies as well as allies. As such, we don’t have any idea of the scope of the rest of the people with them in space, or the rest of the season. There are a number of potential theories that we’ve outlined (some lost human colony in the wake of Thanos, Inhumans in space) but it’s always the humans who are the most dangerous threat on Agents of SHIELD.
The team has been their own biggest threat in season 4 during Aida’s framework arc and the team’s actions — Grant Ward, Aida, everything they’ve done to take down HYDRA — have also proven they can be their own worst enemy. Whenever other humans (or humanoid beings) are in the mix, SHIELD always has a lot more to fear from them then otherworldly threats.
The nature of the people in space remains to be seen, but whoever they are or however much they may come to steal your heart, never forget they’re the reasons that they are in space and they’re the ones who split up the team and whatever luckless team member was left behind on earth to try and find them.
