She’s Gotta Have It star DeWanda Wise is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Deadline revealed today that Wise is set to join Captain Marvel in a mysterious role.
While Deadline didn’t specify who she might be playing, there is a strong chance that she is playing Monica Rambeau. In the comics, Monica is an ally of Carol Danvers (who will be played by Brie Larson) as well as the superhero Spectrum.
The character even took on the Captain Marvel mantle briefly. Once again, while nothing has been said about who Wise is playing in the live-action adaptation, it would make sense if she was Monica.
Production in the film is set to start this year. The casting of Wise follows the recent report of Jude Law being added to the cast as Doctor Walter Lawson a.k.a. Captain Mar-Vell. The Carol Danvers centric picture will be one of the three Marvel films to come out in 2019 from the MCU.
Following her debut in the solo film, Larson will reprise the role in the fourth untitled Avengers installment, hitting theaters on May 3. The following Phase 3 to then come out is the untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel on July 5.
Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn open in theaters March 8, 2019.
