Season 4.3: Agents of HYDRA

Kara

Clark Gregg Agents of SHIELD

Many people refuse to watch Agents of SHIELD, along with many other comic book TV shows and movies, because they consider it as “silly sci-fi” or “too comic book-ish”; however, the series deals with many real-world issues that most shows are afraid to acknowledge. For example, the last story arc of the fourth season involved the Framework, a virtual alternate reality where a Nazi organization known as Hydra rules America, and the society in that fake world comprises of a plethora of parallels to our society. Events such as Inhumans, human/alien hybrids that Hydra looked down upon, being detained and arrested although they never were at fault, and Hydra using the public’s fear of Inhumans in order to further their agenda and gain power are all occurrences that refugees and minorities face today; the show emphasizes the trauma and suffering that the Inhumans face in the dystopian society, which helps people wake up to the fact that similar events occasionally happen in our country today, and many minorities across the nation have the same fears of being mistreated. The Framework effectively shows what can happen to our society if prejudice and fear go too far, and it is definitely not a peaceful, safe haven that anyone would like to inhabit. Additionally, the show consistently brings up the topic of discrimination outside of the Framework too, but in the show’s “reality”, the prejudice depicted against Inhumans carries more subtlety than the kind in the Framework. This is the kind of discrimination that we currently face in today’s society: even though minorities have many basic human rights, bigotry is still rampant among many citizens, and is even present in some government officials. However, this conveys that just because it is “subtle” does not mean that bigotry is nonexistent; it shows that we, as a society, should fight against inequality while we still can. This sort of realism in an unrealistic show makes it worthwhile to watch, as viewers can enjoy both the fantasies and the bold statements directed at the flaws of modern world.

Agents of SHIELD the last day

Season 5, Episode 8 – The Last Day
The team is working out their plan of attack and repairing the ship.  There are “flashbacks” where Raven is depicting how Agent May stepped up and took over as her mother to look out for and guide her.  As the story moved to present day and Raven was now an older woman, after being fatally wounded with the knife, she and Agent May had a powerful moment where she relayed just how much May meant to her and it appeared Agent May felt the same way.  At the end, Raven revealed in confidence to May what the team needs to do to finally get home.  Great moment between those two women.
