1. Antoine ‘Trip’ Triplett
The number one on any list about Agents of SHIELD deaths needs to be B.J Britt’s Antoine Triplett. Trip ended up sacrificing himself and dying in the pivotal episode, “What They Become” in season 2. Trip was trying to protect Daisy (who at the time was going by Skye) from the Terrigen Mist. Having no Inhuman DNA, he turned into a rock statue and crumbled away to the shock of everyone.
The producers talked about how killing Trip was one of the “toughest decisions they had ever made”, but it was essential to underscore the seriousness of Skye’s transformation into Quake. This didn’t stop fans from hoping that Trip would return with #TripLives and concocting theories about his continued presence in the MCU. Notable theories included that he was the Inhuman Hush and that he had transformed into an invisible dust cloud who would make an appearance later in the series.
Trip did appear again in season 4 working with Brett Dalton’s Grant Ward in the anti-HYDRA resistance. After the death of the Jeffrey Mace, Daisy Johnson suggested that Trip take on the mantle of the Patriot and become the new leader of the resistance. This was a nice little Easter Egg to sharp-eyed fans who know that the first Captain America was actually a man named Isaiah Washington who went by the name the Patriot in comics.
The grandson of a Howling Commando with extensive ties to the Marvel Universe, Trip went out doing his grandfather proud. He sacrificed himself to save a life and ultimately further a protector of humanity. Britt brought such joy and swagger to the role and to this day fans still tear up thinking about Trip.
