Exiles 101: A Beginner’s Guide to the Comic

The New Exiles

According to the official synopsis, in the new ongoing book, Nick Fury, now the Unseen, will assemble a team featuring Blink, Khan, Iron Lad, Valkyrie, and Wolvie to fight an evil force threatening all of the multiverse. A synopsis for Exiles #2 also mentions a character named The Time-Eater, so odds are good he will serve as the main villain for the early issues.

In Exiles tradition, these characters will not be the versions you’re used to seeing but instead of different earths. Blink will be the same Clarice Ferguson of Earth-295 featured in Exiles (2001)Valkyrie’s character is inspired by the Thor: Ragnarok version portrayed by actress Tessa Thompson though she won’t be the exact same character from the MCU.

In an interview with Entertainment WeeklySaladin Ahmed confirmed his inspirations for the other characters, including some brand new takes and some deep cuts from older comics.

Fans who have become accustomed to the popular Ms. Marvel might be shocked to see the grizzled Khan, a version of the character who has been through war in a dystopian future and has more in common with Cable than her younger self. Iron Lad (Nathaniel Richards) is a younger, alternate version of Kang from Young Avengers, while Wolvie comes from the obscure X-Babies created by Mojo in Uncanny X-Men.

Ahmed has promised the book will be as crazy as it sounds.

Exiles is a two-fisted, big-hearted wild ride of a book about a diverse team of alternate universe Marvel heroes banding together to stop a dire threat to the multiverse. Sort of What If? meets classic X-Men,” Ahmed said in a statement.

Although we’re still waiting on the first issue, we already know from solicits a few of the alternate characters we’ll get to see later on. Exiles #3 will feature an alternate version of Peggy Carter as Captain America while Exiles #4 will feature Ben Grimm as the pirate Blackbeard.

Given how big the multiverse is, there’s no telling what other characters might show up in this run. And we can’t wait to find out!

Now that you know more about the Exiles, you can pick up Exiles #1 on April 11, 2018. Be sure to come back to The Marvel Report to read our review once the book is out!
