With Captain Marvel in production that means we’re much closer to the fierce heroine gracing the silver screen, and saving the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Thanos. Captain Marvel will be played by Oscar Winner — and my personal favorite actress — Brie Larson! Here’s a list of our favorite Captain Marvel comic book series to prepare you for her upcoming solo movie.
While this list contains books from the last few years, hopefully, they will make you want to dive further back into Carol’s impressive history throughout Marvel comics!
Captain Marvel: In Pursuit of Flight by Kelly Sue Deconnick.
Kelly Sue is my personal favorite Captain Marvel writer. In this series, Carol drops her previous mantle of Ms. Marvel and picks up her new one, Captain Marvel. This series is a perfect start regardless if you followed her under the mantle of Ms. Marvel or not. Kelly embraces Carol’s past but redirects her character making her even more of a well rounded female character.
Captain Marvel: Higher, Further, Faster, More by Kelly Sue Deconnick
Kelly Sue continues her brilliant run of Captain Marvel in this follow up series. Carol is tested a lot during this series. Not only do we have a female character who’s a total badass but is vulnerable, funny, stubborn, and has a big heart. She’s also a huge Star Wars fan.
Captain Marvel: Rise of Alpha Flight by Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas
Butters and Fazekas were the show runners of ABC’S Agent Carter, if you love that show and Captain Marvel then this series is totally for you. In this series, Carol is the leader of the Alpha Flight team. This series takes place predominately in space! And we’re introduced to new characters as well as following Carol on a whole new journey.
A-Force by G. Willow Wilson
In the A-Force series, G. Willow Wilson has brought together some of the fiercest women of Marvel comics and putting them all on one team together. The team is lead by Captain Marvel, Medusa, and She-Hulk. With other members like Lady Loki, Nico Minoru, Dazzler, and new comer: Singularity. Though this isn’t a solo Captain Marvel series, it’s another great series that features her as well as other characters. Also, the Marvel Cinematic Universe should definitely think about making an A-Force film.
The Mighty Captain Marvel by Margaret Stohl
Captain Marvel is now the commander of Alpha Fight. Carol in this series has become of the biggest heroes of the world, however, has Carol began to stray from her true self? In this series, Stohl takes us on a whole new journey with Carol.
There are older series featuring Carol Danvers but under the mantle of Ms. Marvel. She has actually gone through several name changes throughout her Marvel comics history, yet I believe Captain Marvel is her best yet. I hope these series will make you fall in love with Carol and increase your excitement for her upcoming film!
Join the Carol Corps! Captain Marvel soars into theaters March 6th, 2019.
