Marvel to Relaunch Iceman and The Unstoppable Wasp Titles

Fans of Bobby Drake “Iceman” and Nadia Van Dyne “The Wasp” don’t have to wait much longer to see the return of their favorite heroes.

Marvel announced this week plans to bring back the Iceman and The Unstoppable Wasp titles, both of which had been canceled within the last year due to low sales.

Iceman #1 hits shelves September 12 with Sina Grace returning as writer and Nathan Stockman coming on as the artist for the ongoing series. The first arc will involve Bobby stopping a massacre of the Morlocks community of X-Men. Bishop will also play a key role in the new story.

The Unstoppable Wasp #1 will hit stores October 3 as an ongoing series. Jeremy Whitley returns for writing duties with art by Gurihiru. In a release, Marvel teased Nadia will be teaming up with Agents of G.I.R.L. as well as her stepmother, Janet van Dyne for an investigation, “to uncover a mysterious connection between A.I.M. and Nadia’s father, Hank Pym.”

Why bring back these two books?

Marvel editor Alanna Smith cited strong trade sales and fan support as some of the reasons why The Unstoppable Wasp was brought back. The fact that the book is friendly to younger audiences could have also played a role, since that’s a market Marvel has yet to conquer compared to the success of other comic publishers.

Trade sales weren’t specifically referenced for Iceman, but the book did have a devoted fanbase especially in the LGBTQ community as Marvel’s first ongoing comic with a gay-male lead.

Only time will tell if Marvel decides to resurrect any other titles from the comic graveyard.
