21st Century Fox released an official poster and movie synopsis for the upcoming Dark Phoenix movie. While the trailer will premiere later today on the The Late Late Show with James Corden on CBS, you can check out the poster below.
The poster draws from the “cosmic” themes of the film while giving a subtle nod to the franchise with an “X” behind Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey.
Originally scheduled to be released this year, Dark Phoenix was pushed back to a 2019 release date. Also new is the title, with the movie seeming to have officially dropped the “X-Men” moniker based on promotional materials.
In an Instagram post from star Sophie Turner teasing the trailer you can hear some dialogue between James McAvoy’s Professor X and Jessica Chastain’s new character talking about an “evil” that one can only guess is about the possessed Jean Grey.
Read the full official synopsis below:
In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
Dark Phoenix arrives in theaters on February 14, 2019.
