Sony Plans Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Sequel and Spider-Women Spinoff

Before Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse even lands in theatres, Sony has confirmed plans for a sequel and spinoff movie according to reports from Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter.

The studio is reportedly working on a Spider-Women film with writer Bek Smith (Zoo) that would focus on a team of women with Spider powers. Lauren Montgomery (Voltron, Batman: Year One) is reportedly in negotiations to direct.

While it’s already been confirmed that Gwen Stacy “Spider-Gwen” will appear in Into the Spider-Verse, there’s a long list of female Spider characters Sony could be looking at to add. In the comics crossover event also titled Spider-Women, Gwen teamed up with popular characters Jessica Drew AKA Spider-Woman and Cindy Moon AKA Silk.

A more recent miniseries titled Spider-Girls featured the children of Peter Parker from alternate universes including Spider-Girl Mayday Parker and Spiderling Annie May Parker.

Meanwhile, the planned sequel for Into the Spider-Verse will continue to follow Miles Morales’ story and Joaquim Dos Santos (Voltron, Avatar: The Last Airbender) will direct with David Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984) writing. It’s not yet confirmed if executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller will return.

During the film’s panel at New York Comic Con earlier this year,  Phil Lord hinted that if the movie was successful there were many different directions they could go for a spinoff because the Spider-Verse is so big. If Into the Spider-Verse and subsequent movies do well, it’s very possible Sony could look at doing even more spinoffs using Spider characters seen in this film and the comics.

The real question is when will Spider-Ham get his standalone film?

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse premieres in theatres on December 14, 2018.
