Warning: This post will include spoilers for Season 2 of Runaways.
Season 2 of Runaways saw new characters introduced, old relationships tested and the stakes raised. Overall, it was a strong season that improved on the first and showed off the deep bench the show has in the cast of kids and parents alike. Although Hulu hasn’t officially renewed the show for a third season yet, we’re already thinking ahead to what we’d like to see next
1. Answers about the Gibborim:
During the huge cliffhanger of Season 2, where the Gibborim had inhabited the bodies of Tina, Stacey
2. More powers (especially from the Dark Dimension):
The jump from Season 1 to Season 2 in seeing what the Runaways could do with their powers was huge. But there’s still a lot left to explore. We’ve only begun to see the magical consequences of Nico’s powers, something that was kept under wraps but then slowly revealed in Season 2. Her ties to the Dark Dimension hark back to the MCU and Doctor Strange.
Topher’s introduction taught us a little more about how Molly’s powers may work, but as one of the most powerful Marvel characters, there is still a lot let untapped. With the acquisition of Fox, is it possible the show could also introduce the element of a mutant origin for her in addition to the explosion?
Finally, we already saw a sketch of the Leapfrog this season, so what other inventions could Chase come up with in Season 3?
3. Even bigger shakeups to the team:
There were plenty of new character additions this season to mixed results. Topher felt like an unnecessary distraction within the overall story arc and he was gone too soon. Xavin, on the other hand, threw a wrench in Karolina’s relationship with Nico and will play an important role as they go against the Gibborim.
That said, there are lots of characters left from the comics for the writers to consider adding in Season 3. Our pick would be Victor Mancha, aka son of Ultron. Not only would his introduction really shake up team dynamics, but his complicated origin and accidental betrayal could also fill up an entire season-long arc.
4. A Cloak & Dagger crossover:
This request for Season 3 might be the least likely, but it also hinges on what we see in Cloak & Dagger Season 2. We already know Ty is on the run, so it is possible he and Tandy end up leaving New Orleans for the West Coast.
While the crossover likely wouldn’t follow the comics exactly, which finds the Runaways and Cloak and Dagger at odds at first, it still makes a lot of sense given the tone of the shows. Both shows take time to examine real-world issues and interrogate the characters’ privilege, so I’d love to see the groups interact.
From a network standpoint, this crossover isn’t that far fetched. Freeform is owned by Disney and Hulu is partially owned by Disney.
5. A new main villain:
After two seasons of dealing with Jonah and the Pride, it’s time to see the Runaways move on. While it’s likely the fight against the Gibborim will still take up a lot of Season 3, I’d love to see the Runaways face a new enemy in the second half. Fighting against their parents has forced the team to grow as individuals, but by dragging out the conflict the show risks becoming stale. Can the show survive beyond the end of Pride? I really hope so.
