WonderCon: Marvel Rising Announces 3 New Specials

Marvel Rising focuses on the Secret Warriors, a team built by Daisy Johnson and made up of strong heroes specifically selected by teams of little girls and boys across the country. Featuring Daisy Johnson, Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), Squirrel Girl (Doreen Green), Inferno, Patriot (Isiah Washington), Ghost Spider (Gwen Stacy). Their animal companions Tippy Toe the squirrel and Lockjaw, Kamala’s Inhuman squish-face dog, join them.

Marvel Rising: Heart of Iron introduces Riri Williams to the Marvel Universe. Marvel Animation’s special is an adorable look at the power of friendship, the triumph of overcoming trauma and just how the team can empower those who feel a little less in the face of adversity. It’s not the last time we’ll see Riri Williams fight alongside the Secret Warriors either.

At WonderCon 2019, Marvel shone a spotlight on their animated series. After screening Marvel Rising: Heart of Iron, Marvel shared that there will be three new specials including one starring break-out character Princess Shuri who made her big screen debut with 2018’s Black Panther. The cast and crew present at the Marvel Rising panel revealed the synopsis for each one of the three specials airing over the next year.

Marvel Rising: Battle of the Bandsspotlights Dove Cameron (“Descendants 3”) as Ghost-Spider in a 22-minute animated special. On the day of Gwen’s “Battle of the Bands” competition, mysterious attacks force her and the Secret Warriors to investigate. Can they save the city and get Gwen to the concert on time?

Marvel Rising: Operation Shuri will introduce the fan-favorite character Shuri, voiced by Daisy Lightfoot (“Marvel Avengers: Black Panther’s Quest”) to the Marvel Rising universe in a 22-minute animated special. The lives of the Secret Warriors are turned upside down when faced with their latest mission: hang out with Shuri, the Crown Princess of Wakanda, and show her what it’s like to be an ordinary teenager. But nothing’s ordinary when you’re dealing with one of the smartest and most famous people on the planet.

Marvel Rising: Playing with Fire will star Tyler Posey (“Teen Wolf”) as Inferno. In this 44-minute special, Inferno’s powers are stolen by a young and powerful villain, and it’s up to the Secret Warriors to defeat their new foe and help their friend. But does Inferno even want his powers back? Meanwhile, America Chavez, voiced by Cierra Ramirez (“Good Trouble”), learns a lesson about friendship and family from teammate Ms. Marvel.

The Marvel Rising specials consistently include strong lessons for pre-teens, teens and adults, and the new ones will likely be no exception. With its focus on diversity and hilarious and inspiring characters, it’s a must watch for any Marvel fan with kids and, dare we say it, any Marvel fan.
