Phil Lord and Chris Miller Working on Secret Marvel Project

Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are currently working on a mysterious Marvel project. If the name sounds familiar, that is because these are the same people who were behind the wildly popular LEGO movies and the critically acclaimed, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Not much is known about the Marvel project except that it will be a series of shows developed for television and will utilize “Sony’s Marvel characters” according to Miller. More than likely, the shows will include Spider-Man or other Spiderverse-related characters considering the smash hit Into the Spiderverse became. Additionally, Spider-Man related characters are the biggest cache of Marvel characters that Sony has at their disposal.

But what might the characters be that Lord and Miller are developing television shows for? There are certainly many directions this could take. For instance, is it possible that we will see a new iteration of Gwen Stacy? Gwen was briefly touched upon in the third Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie, had a significant role in the Amazing Spider-Man films from Marc Webb, and we saw an iteration of her in a parallel universe as Ghost-Spider/Spider-Gwen in Into the Spiderverse. Could it be that it’s time to reinvent the character once more?

Another possible option is at the end of Into the Spiderverse, the film seemingly teased at a Spider-Man 2099-centric sequel only to reveal an homage to a popular internet meme. We have yet to see a mainstream film/television version of Spider-Man 2099‘s Miguel O’Hara and certainly, the story of the brilliant Alchemax geneticist in a future cyberpunk New York would make for a great television series. Additionally, having another protagonist superhero of color at the forefront of a property is always an optimistic prospect.

The US is comprised of many different cultures and it’s about time that our media represent it as such; especially a company as influential as Marvel. We are already seeing Marvel embracing diversity in its heroes both previously with Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and also with the future Phase 4 films: The Eternals and Shang Chi so it wouldn’t be unheard of for them to introduce more diversity into this secret project. There is also no word yet on which platform these television shows will be available.

The Marvel Report will update this story as it develops.
