The Green Lantern TV series, Lanterns is finally a go, but with a massive upgrade! As stated and confirmed by James Gunn before, Chris Mundy (Ozark) will serve as the showrunner, while Damon Lindelof (Lost) and Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) will help co-write and executive produce Lanterns. However, instead of airing a Max original, as initially announced, HBO has given Lanterns a straight-to-series pick-up, with 8 episodes ordered for season 1! HBO, DC Studios, and Warner Bros. TV also included a new series synopsis for Lanterns:
Official Lanterns Logline: The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
This seemingly confirms Stewart will be a younger Green Lantern being trained by a veteran Jordan, but no Lanterns casting was revealed at this time. HBO also didn’t announce a window release for the series nor when it is expected to start filming. In a joint statement from DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran, along with HBO and Max Content, Chairman and CEO, Casey Bloys shared the following about Lanterns’ move to HBO;
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content: “We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s ‘Green Lantern.’ As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live action series will mark an exciting new era.”
James Gunn and Peter Safran, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of DC Studios: “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and LANTERNS brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.’”
