WARNING: Spoilers for the fourth episode of Creature Commandos.
Monsters Rule The World.
Beginning Of The End
Creature Commandos has reached its halfway point. Circe has been apprehended, the Princess has been saved from annihilation, and the team gets to go back to Belle Reve. They have been found by Frankenstein, who is stalking The Bride. As the Weasel exits the plane, his lawyer notices. This episode focuses heavily on the backstory of Weasel. We also see why Circe went after Princess Ilana, and it leaves quite an impression on Amanda Waller. So much so it causes a divide between Waller and Flag. This episode is a roller coaster of emotions, ranging from the Weasel’s unfortunate background to a tense future ridden in a dark apocalypse. The episode ends between Frankenstein and Flag, with Frankenstein delivering one of the funniest lines in the entire series. This is the most informative chapter to date and follows the events of the previous installment gloriously.
Disastrous Circumstances
With Weasel being the main focus, we finally learn a few things about the beast. The alias given to the Weasel is “John Doe” due to its inability to form words and, did not murder 27 children. Through flashbacks, we see the weasel playing with children outside of a schoolyard, only for a groundskeeper to come and misinterpret the situation. The groundskeeper fires a gun in the basement which sets the building on fire. While trying to save the last child (who looks like the Princess) Weasel is shot by police and watches the building collapse on top of the girl. On the way back to Pokolistan, the Weasel is dreaming, to which Bride and Nina shrug off as he’s just “Chasing Squirrels.” The trauma the weasel endured is masked by its unhinged nature, making the Weasel one of the most tragic characters.
Wicked Visions
Amanda Waller takes it upon herself to question Circe, and wants to kill Ilana Rostovic. Circe tells Waller of a vision she sees where the princess rules over the world. Expert Amanda McPherson is called in to verify the validity of Circe’s visions. In an apocalyptic vision, Waller witnesses the end of the world, with countless other DC heroes dead on pikes. Superman is the exception, as he is on a cross. This revelation leads Waller to immediately put the commandos back in action with a new directive: kill Ilana Rostovic. Rick Flag walks out on Waller. Some characters shown have projects in the works, namely Superman, Peacemaker, Batman, and Booster Gold. This is a fun tease for characters and also gives us an idea of what some would look like in Gunn’s DCU.
Dilf v Frankenstein: Dawn of Friendship
The episode climaxed in a brawl between Rick Flag Sr. and Eric Frankenstein. As Flag opens the door to his home, Frankenstein emerges from a stolen vehicle, and the two proceed to fight. After a heated battle of strength and wit, with some clever banter, Frankenstein learns that the Bride does not feel for Flag. The two reconcile and form an uneasy alliance, to save the princess and get Frankenstein closer to the bride. Frankenstein delivers one of the funniest lines in the entire series during this fight, beautifully voiced by David Harbour. Hopefully one day we can see Frankenstein and Flag reunited on that front in the future.
Who’s Next?
This episode of Creature Commandos is full of humor, and spectacle, with some heart littered throughout. Between the backstory of the Weasel, Circe’s prophetic clue into a possible future, and the skirmish between two budding pals, this chapter will go down as the most memorable to date. With the commandos back in Pokolistan intending to assassinate Ilana, will Flag and Frankenstein find a way to clear her name? Find out next week on James Gunn’s Creature Commandos!
