Kristin Kreuk and her comic Black Star

Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk Dives Into Comics With New Gothic Horror Series

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you mix the gritty survival of The Revenant with the dark magic of Harry Potter, you’re about to find out.

Titan Comics is officially bringing “Black Star” to stores and digital devices on July 29, 2026. This five-issue series marks the comic debut of Kristin Kreuk (“Smallville“, “Reacher”), who teamed up with her “Burden of Truth” team, Peter Mooney (Rookie Blue, Mistletoe Murders) and screenwriter Eric Putzer, to create something truly “weird and wonderful.”

“We were inspired by the city’s lore and, because we worked so well together, began spending our spare time on set (and then, for years afterwards) developing our own take on the history and magic we imagined pulsing beneath its surface, shaping the rhythms of the city and the battles raging just beyond our view,” Kreuk said.

Northern Gothic Noir Vibes

Set in the frozen, brutal landscape of the 19th-century fur trade, the story follows Dashiell Carlyle. Dashiell is just trying to survive a literal war zone when he realizes he has magical powers.

He’s quickly recruited by a secret society that wants to use magic to build a utopia. The catch? Their “perfect world” might require a body count that’s way too high. Expect plenty of blood, grit, and dark humor, all brought to life by the haunting artwork of Joe Bocardo (Nightwalkers, The Hexiles).

“Sometimes people come to my hometown and they can’t see past its rough edges or inhospitable weather. But it was clear Kristin and Eric could see right into the strangeness that makes Winnipeg so unique,” said Mooney. “This isn’t so much an alternative history, but an omitted chapter that’s been lost to time. It’s bizarre and fantastical and entirely imagined — but it goes a long way towards explaining why the city is how it is today.”

“For a comic book artist, working on a series as ambitious and well-written as Black Star is a gift,” said Bocardo. “But if you also work on it with a talented and friendly team that gives you creative freedom, then it’s not a gift; it’s a privilege.”
