The Hollywood Reporter broke news today that David Ayer, director of DC villain property Squicide Squad, has been greenlit to fast track Gotham City Sirens as both director and producer. Margot Robbie, who played the ever popular Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad will reprise her role as well as co-produce the film.
Gotham City Sirens is a comic series based on the adventures of DC villainesses Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy. It began its run in 2009 written by Paul Dini with art by Guillem March. The film is having it’s screenplay written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet who has written scripts for the Tomb Raider remake and Sherlock Holmes 3. She is considered one of the top female writers in the actin genre. There is no indication yet if the film will be based on anything that happened in the comic.
Geoff Johns, the head of DCs film division and Jon Berg will also be involved in producorial roles. The making of Suicide Squad was not without it’s bumps along the way which included a few re-shoots. In the end the film was well received by movie goers as it grossed over 756 million. This high return has not only made Suicide Squad 2 a viable project, but Gotham City Sirens as well.
Also in the pipe is the notion of a Deadshot spinoff film, the character played by Will Smith. Ayer is finishing up principal photography on his film for Netflix, Bright, which also stars Smith.
