X-23: Five Comic Books to Read Before You See Logan

First Recommendation: X-23 Innocence Lost

X-23 Innocence Lost is the comic book version of X-23’s origin story, expanding upon her story first introduced in X-Men Evolution. This comic was released in 2005 written by Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, the writers who created X-23 for X-Men Evolution.

X-23 was created as a project of revenge. The experiment was run by Dr. Martin Sutter, the son of one of the scientist who was killed by Wolverine when he escaped Weapon X. Sutter brought on board renowned scientist, Dr. Sarah Kinney, to run the cloning project. Originally, the project was to create an exact clone of Wolverine, but after many failures Sarah decided to use a -y chromosome for the experiment. Sutter was not happy with this decision. So he forced Sarah to become the surrogate mother of the female Wolverine clone.

The scientists called the female Wolverine clone, X-23, not giving her a true name. These scientists didn’t raise X-23 as a human, but instead as a weapon. She was never suppose to learn what it meant to be human, but the connections she formed with Sarah and her sensei helped her learn about creating relationships. By the end of the story X-23 loses the life she knew as an experiment, but also gains an opportunity to explore her humanity. The symbolism of this humanity is shown when she receives a real name from her birth mother…now X-23 is Laura Kinney.
