Plot: Galactus the Life Bringer summons his former herald, the Silver Surfer, to save the universe from collapsing. In order to complete the job, Surfer and Dawn Greenwood need to take the two halves of the Alpha/Omega to opposite ends of the universe. However the trip will be one way.
Story: If you read the last Ultimates series, then you know Galactus is no longer the Devourer of Worlds. Since this transformation, I have been looking forward to seeing Galactus interact with the Silver Surfer again. There’s a funny exchange of dialogue when Surfer asks what happened and Galactus only says “Earthlings.” To which Surfer responds, “Of Course.” Dan Slott is one of my favorite Marvel writers and his dialogue style is one of the reasons.
Speaking of dialogue one of my favorite scenes in this issue is when the Surfer and Dawn are at opposite ends of the Universe. Both heroes realize they are far apart and may never see each other again. At this point Surfer yells in anger and asks the universe to help him for all the times he’s saved it. The emotion in Surfer’s lines make his feelings clear to the reader. This leads to another fantastic scene of Eternity fulfilling Surfer’s request.
Art: This issue makes excellent uses of double page spreads. These spreads allow the reader to see what’s happening to Dawn and Surfer at the same time. Also the issue provides a nice close up of Eternity’s fingers bringing Dawn and Surfer back together. The issue also contains some awesome splash pages such as Eternity fulfilling Surfer’s request. Also the final page shows Dawn and Surfer reunited in a passionate kiss is amazing. Another thing I enjoyed about this issue (and the series in general) is Michael Allred’s design of the Silver Surfer. Allred’s Surfer has excellent facial expressions and a nice gleam. Overall, the artwork is fantastic.
Verdict: This issue takes two characters to opposite ends of the universe and reunites them before it’s over. The characters come off as sympathetic to the reader in this emotionally fulfilling story. Also since this is a one-shot story, it’s a perfect jumping on point for new readers.
