Weapon X #1 Review Cover

Story- So, what are my feelings when I finished reading Weapon X #1? Let’s go with PUMPED! The setup is perfect. Wolverine leading a book and clashing with Sabretooth while both of them and being chased down by cyborg assassins with adamantium bodies? SIGN ME UP! Greg Pak knows how to write a book and man does Greg Land know how to draw it! This is only issue #1 but with the stage set, and the cast given, I can guarantee that this is going to be a book worth buying. If you thought Marvel was leaving the X-men and mutants behind, think again. This is an S+ Class creator team.

I’m so happy to see my mutants get the respect and love they deserve again. The past several months they’ve been subjected to a brutal war with the Inhumans that flirted with the idea of their extinction. We’ve seen portentous titles like Death of X and Inhumans vs. X-men following books with creative teams that are far less than Marvel’s best. Meanwhile with Charles Soule heading off an excellent story in Uncanny Inhumans (brandishing the X-men’s original adjective) it looked like it was very possible that X-men was going to be done away with.

Weapon X #1 Review Wolverine Hunt

Surprise! They are back! I appreciated every page of Weapon X, and we already have a compelling storyline that is not only intriguing and easy to follow, but has a classic feel to it. Logan, even in his old age is on the run again with what I can only assume is Weapon X on his tail. Greg Pak has an excellent way of introducing epic scenes on the page turn, and fans will be elated to see many old characters re-emerge as central characters.

Issue #1 doesn’t reveal too much information, but from what I can gather it looks like many of the old members of X-force are being captured, likely to create cyborg killing machines based off of their DNA. Aside from Wolverine and Sabretooth, the members include Domino, Warpath, and Deathstrike. We are still unsure of exactly who the organization is, or what their intentions are, but it’s obvious that whatever they are, they aren’t good.

Weapon X #1 Review Deathstrike

Art – Every. Single. Page of this comic is a beauty to look at. The cover has rich line art with deep contours and outlines, giving awesome profiles of each of our star characters. Just took a close look at Deathstrike’s claws! I’ve never seen them drawn like that before. There is a sweet macabre in their deadliness, and I absolutely love it. On the pages, not only are the characters excellently drawn, but the background environment is laden with precision detail. Each panel has time and care put into it. Greg land is of the highest caliber and colorist Frank D’armata follows up with beautiful vibrant scenes. I could read it several times, and be just as astonished.

Verdict- RessurXion is standing by its name. If they are attempting to raise the X-teams back to their pedestals, they are doing it right now. This is a juggernaut of a creative team, and I cannot wait to the next issues. Immaculate work.

Star Rating- 5 out of 5.
