Captain Marvel will be more character driven film than a spectacle. This will be the first solo lead female film from Marvel Studios. In an interview with Vulture, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige commented that Captain Marvel will focus more on the character of Carol Danvers than the just her superhero abilities:
“That’s a big part of the storyline we’re putting together, and it’s certainly been a big part of the development conversation. It’s also where Boden and Fleck can really make their mark: Ultimately, the real stakes of the film have to do with who Captain Marvel is — a human pilot named Carol Danvers, granted superhuman abilities — rather than what she can do.”
Carol is a phenomenal woman in the comics and whose heart has always been bigger than her powers — even though let’s face it — Carol is one of the most powerful superheroes in Marvel Comics. As a fan Kelly Sue Deconnick’s run of Captain Marvel, I’m so glad that the film is focusing on these character-driven elements:
“Particularly for Captain Marvel, which is going to have a lot of spectacle, it ultimately needs to be about the three-dimensional, multilayered Carol Danvers character,” said Feige. “You have to be able to track her and follow her and relate to her at all points of the movie, regardless of how many visual effects and spaceships and bad guys are filling the frame. That’s what’s important.”
This all sounds pretty exciting right?! It’s very uplifting to get a confirmation from Kevin that we will get to see a multi-layered-3-dimensional Carol on screen. I really do believe directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will capture the Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman’s script beautifully. And Brie Larson (our fearless Captain) will do an amazing job as Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers, as I’ve been singing her praises forever!
