Plot: Gambit’s back and he’s stealing some nanotechnology. When Gambit meets his buyer, it turns out she’s Bolivar Trask’s granddaughter, Olivia. After Gambit hears she’s going to sell the tech to the military he attempts to get it back, but he inadvertently creates a new Sentinel.
Story: The main thing fans will enjoy about this issue is Gambit. The Ragin’ Cajun has not been seen since All-New X-Factor ended. Fortunately Gambit’s appearance in this issue does not make any references so it feels like a fresh jumping on point for the character. Guggenheim does an excellent job with Gambit’s dialogue, which provides the character some clever comebacks. Also this issue opens up with Gambit in the middle of the heist to remind fans why he’s one of the best thieves in the Marvel Universe.
Gambit’s story takes up most of the issue which leaves the Gold team with filler scenes. Fortunately these scenes serve some purpose. Logan and Storm investigate the body of a mutant at the morgue which sets up a future story arc. Colossus and Dr. Cecilia Reyes discover the reptilian member of Mesmero’s Brotherhood is not a mutant. Next we have Kitty Pryde, Rachel Grey (Prestige), and Nightcrawler fighting the Serpant Society while the trio share some witty banter. Even though these scenes are just filler, they are still entertaining to read especially the one with Kitty, Rachel, and Kurt.
Art: The art for this issue is spectacular. Good color choices match the lighting for each scene, and the panel layouts provide smooth transitions for the reader. Plus the onomatopoeias for sound effects fit perfectly in the scenes without pulling too much focus from the characters. Also I enjoyed how Gambit’s mind on the astral plane is his version of New Orleans, LA.
Verdict: If you love Gambit then you’ll love this issue. Gambit’s appearance stays true to his character while not referencing any prior appearances. Also the rest of X-Men deal with filler work until Gambit calls for their assistance. Overall, this is a good jumping on point for new readers.
