Luke Cage is getting exciting! In addition to two new villains walking the streets of Harlem as well as The Defenders heating up the San Diego Comic Con, they’ve just announced the premiere’s director and she’s – in a word – amazing. Lucy Liu will be taking over the premiere episode of Luke Cage. According to Deadline, the actress will continue her foray behind the camera which started during Elementary. She’s responsible for directing a handful of episodes for the CBS series that she also stars in. The actress spoke about working with the house of ideas in a statement from Netflix.
“What a thrill to collaborate with Marvel and Netflix, two industry titans, who paint our world with inspiring stories and beguiling characters, It is such an honor to work with such a passionate and fearless team.”
Marvel Head of Television Jeph Loeb also spoke about Liu in a statement and both he and Marvel sound thrilled to have a strong director behind the premiere. “When you’re dealing with a bulletproof man, it helps if you have a bulletproof director,” Loeb said. “Lucy brings a keen eye, a superb sense of story and an obvious love of actors. She is rocking Luke Cage 2.” Awesome!
Liu’s relationship with Luke Cage continues her relationship with the streaming giant. She’ll next be seen in front of the camera in Netflix’s Set It Up with Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, and Taye Diggs. Hopefully it signals more directing projects for the former Kill Bill star.
Neema Barnette, a producer and director on Queen Sugar also took to Twitter in a conversation with Black Girl Nerds to announce that she will be also be starting work on Luke Cage in August.
Ha ha & I start directing Luke Cage in August! I'm Harlem born, bred & still live there! Gonna put some REAL HARLEM love in the show!
