Thwip! Spider-Man: Homecoming crossed another milestone at the domestic box office yesterday pushing past the $300M mark. While some feared the film might not have strong legs after a steep drop in it’s second weekend going up against Fox’s War For The Planet Of The Apes, the recent weeks have fared much better for the Jon Watts directed film. Combined with international grosses, it now sits at $682M globally making it the eighth highest grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony domestic distribution boss Adrian Smith released the following statement.
“Congratulations to our partners at Marvel and everyone who worked on Spider-Man: Homecoming for reaching this important milestone. We couldn’t be prouder of the film and our incredible cast and filmmakers for delivering exactly what moviegoers wanted to see this summer.”
As it heads towards $700M globally, it edges even closer to surpassing the lifetime gross of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. While that might not seem impressive considering that film’s reception, it still has two markets ahead and will open in Japan today and be following by China on September 8th. These are two major markets for the wallcrawler as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 brought in $125M from those two alone back in 2014. Be sure to check back for any further updates in the coming weeks.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently in theaters.
