The adult version of Jean Grey is making her return to the Marvel Universe, according to Newsarama.
On Monday morning, Marvel and writer Matthew Rosenberg promised a major shakeup for the X-Men books, with Jean officially returning in a story called Phoenix Resurrection.
“Matt [Rosenberg] came to us with a really interesting and unique approach to bringing Jean back,” senior editor Mark Paniccia told Newsarama. “It’s not what we expected, and plays to Matt’s biggest strengths as a storyteller. This is very cool mystery building to a mind-warping climax. And it has plenty of what you’d expect from an X-Men epic of this magnitude. Action, romance, sacrifice, lots of X-Men and five great artists.”
Paniccia teases some major narrative points that will emerge from Jean’s return to the living. This includes the question of what happens to the younger version of herself, currently starring in her own self-titled mini-series. The younger Jean has been in the modern-day Marvel Universe for several years, having time traveled to the present alongside the other original X-Men. Regardless, Paniccia promises that the adult Jean Grey will return to a starring role in the X-Men books. She will return to a world that has vastly changed in her 10+ year absence. Readers last saw the adult Jean Grey over ten years ago, killed in the pages of New X-Men #150.
Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey #1 will be written by Rosenberg with art from Leinil Yu. It is set to release on December 27.
