True Believers can now write their own tales of suspense using Marvel: Create Your Own, an upcoming partnership between Marvel Comics and TapTap Comics.
Marvel describes the new platform as a “fan-powered community where users can write, create, and share their own Marvel stories.”
Marvel: Create Your Own will allow users to take pre-drawn models of their favorite characters and various backdrops to create their own comics.
When launched, users will be able to access the program on desktop or mobile app. Check out the 30-second introduction video below that gives a walk-through of the program:
The promotional image on the website includes a broad array of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Gwen, and Daredevil, meaning Marvel will likely give access to their most popular characters. However, the platform will include limitations.
According to the terms of service provided on the website, users will not be able to take the content off the platform or use created content for commercial use. They also include a long list of banned content and material subjects including sexually explicit images, graphic violence, and death to name a few.
Ultimately, these terms of service protect Marvel from users profiting from or misusing Marvel’s intellectual property.
What some users might have a problem with is that Marvel will also own any story ideas created on the platform and will be able to use that content without, “limit as to time, manner or frequency of use, without further notice to you, with or without attribution, and without the requirement of permission from or payment to you or any other person or entity.”
While the program is probably marketed more towards fans than aspiring comic writers, the idea that Marvel will not have to further compensate creators might discourage use.
The platform has not fully launched yet, but there is an option to sign up for future updates at the Marvel: Create Your Own website.
