While we’ve heard about ABC developing a number of new Marvel TV projects, don’t expect any to come to life in the next TV season. At TCA Winter Press Tour, ABC president Channing Dungey talked about the future of Marvel TV besides Agents of SHIELD for the 2018-19 TV season.
Even though Agents of SHIELD is potentially coming back for a sixth season, Dungey did reveal that there’s a chance we may not see any new Marvel projects join the line-up next season.
“We developed a couple things this season that we don’t think are going to end up going forward, so we’re going to look really carefully about what we do next.”
What new Marvel TV shows do we know of that ABC has been working on lately? So far, we only know about that Jessica Jones–esque show that a Marvel TV Senior VP was teasing last summer.
We don’t even know the status of John Ridley’s mysterious Marvel show that has been working on for ABC for over three years now. While Agents of SHIELD Season 5 has been off to a solid start, the same can’t be said for newcomer Inhumans that is most likely not returning for a second season.
Do Dungey’s comments mean that we’ll never see any new Marvel shows on ABC in the future? Of course not, it just means that we’ll probably not see any new ones for the 2018-19 TV season.
Whatever happens after that remains to be seen, but Marvel TV is not going anywhere anytime soon. Runaways and The Gifted were renewed for second seasons this week. 2018 will feature new seasons of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil and Iron Fist on the Netflix front.
In addition to that, Freeform is debuting Cloak & Dagger sometime in 2018 on Thursday nights. While we don’t know where it will air, we’re supposedly still getting New Warriors this year as Marvel TV’s first comedy series.
