4. Isabelle Hartley & Victoria Hand
Hartley and Hand have an interesting comics history. Isabelle Hartley was originally in a relationship with Victoria Hand and Hartley sent a letter of complaint to Fury about how he handled the agency. This caused a rift between Hartley and Hand who accused Isabelle of ruining their relationship for questioning Nick Fury.
Her path differed considerably in the MCU. Sent with Mack and Bobbi Morse to infiltrate Robert Gonzales’s “real SHIELD”, Hartley met her end after being forced to touch the Obelisk during her fight with Crusher Creel, also known as the Absorbing Man.
Hartley belongs on the list because she was portrayed by Lucy Lawless (anything that detracts from Lucy Lawless in our lives is something that needs to be stopped). Hartley is also important because she represents a group of characters not mentioned often in the MCU – the LGBT community. Even if they never actually explored just what it meant to those characters in the show, it’s important to just have them included.
In the MCU Victoria Hand supports Phil Coulson in an effort to take down HYDRA. At first she does not trust the team, but comes to understand that John Garrett is the real threat. She ask for Ward to prove his loyalty by shooting Garrett before he can be brought to trial. Instead, Ward shoots Hand.
Hand’s death was one of the most shocking moments on Agents of SHIELD. It was the moment Grant Ward was revealed to be a secret HYDRA Agent planted inside SHIELD. After the events of Captain America: Civil War, no one could be trusted. SHIELD doubled down on this idea in their next episode, the infamous “Turn, Turn, Turn”. After Ward killed Hand, there was no turning back.
Isabelle and Hartley were great characters for the short time that fans got to know them. Here’s to them!
