Deadpool 2 Takes Top Spot at Box Office from Avengers: Infinity War

The Merc with a Mouth has done it again. Deadpool 2 brought in $125 million this weekend at the North American box office, knocking off Avengers: Infinity War from the top spot.

While it broke records for an R-rated film with $18.6 million in Thursday previews and a $53.3 million opening day, its weekend total failed to surpass the $132 million opening weekend of the first Deadpool.

It still earns the title of the second largest R-rated opening ever ahead of It and is Fox’s second-biggest opening of all time.

The film also performed well critically earning a Certified Fresh score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore.

The first Deadpool opened on a holiday weekend, which could explain why the sequel failed to break its box office record. The film will compete with the opening of the more family-friendly Solo: A Star Wars Story next weekend.

After pushing back the releases of The New Mutants and X-Men: Dark Phoenix to 2019, this will be Fox’s only Marvel movie release of the year.  An X-Force movie is already planned as the next sequel in the Deadpool franchise.

Deadpool 2 is directed by David Leitch and stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Josh Brolin, Brianna Hildebrand, TJ Miller and Zazie Beetz.
