The Los Angeles County Museum of Art will be hosting a conversation with the costume designer for Black Panther, Ruth E. Carter. It is difficult to think of the film, Black Panther and not consider the incredible costumes worn by the characters of Wakanda. For many fans of Black Panther, the costumes contributed as much to the film as the specials effects and acting. The fanciful and distinctive costumes transported audiences to another world and none of this could have been accomplished without the help of Ruth E. Carter.
In addition to her incredible work in Black Panther, Ruth E. Carter has also lent her costuming talents to a number of iconic films throughout history. Carter’s work can also be seen in such films as, Amistad, Malcolm X, and Shaft. Browncoats may also be delighted to know that Carter also served as the costume designer for Serenity, a continuation of the cult classic television series, Firefly. During the conversation at the LACMA, Carter will specifically be discussing her process in designing the “Afro-futurist” style costumes seen in Black Panther.
The conversation will also include Senior Curator of Costume and Textiles at the LACMA, Sharon Takeda. The event will take place on Thursday, February 7th at the Bing Theatre from 7:30-8:30 PM. Tickets are $5 for LACMA members and students and $15 for the general public.
