Iron Man VR Brings the Armored Avenger to PS VR

While video games have given players ample opportunities to play as some of the most recognizable heroes in comics, there have been few opportunities to step into the role of Iron Man. On Monday, PlayStation revealed plans to help fill some of this void with the unveiling of a brand new Iron Man game, one that would fit in with Tony Stark’s futuristic vision. Those who own PlayStation VR will soon be able to engage in a virtual reality adventure called Iron Man VR.

Monday’s State of Play presentation opened with a look into Tony Stark’s private jet. He’s conversing with trusted AI partner Friday before the plane falls under attack. The plane cracks open and leaves Tony falling through the sky, forcing the hero to call upon his Iron Man suit, setting up a first look at how Iron Man VR will play. The first-person perspective will play out close to what would be expected out of Iron Man, with players able to see their diagnostics first-hand. Repulsors can be used by holding out each hand, while players can also fire off Iron Man’s Unibeam. Obstacles will come from all sides, giving players a full 360 degree freedom of movement.

“In Marvel’s Iron Man VR, the player, who plays as the genius inventor Tony Stark, confronts ghosts from his past—powerful forces who seek to ruin him and everything he stands for,” Game Director Ryan Payton said on PlayStation.Blog. “By fully embracing the magic of PlayStation VR, players will come face-to-face with iconic allies and Super Villains as they jet around the globe on a heroic mission to save not only Stark Industries, but the world itself. We cannot wait to share more about how we are telling an original Iron Man story in a way that only virtual reality allows.”

While Marvel Games has released games on PC and consoles over the years, this is the publisher’s first effort on the PlayStation VR peripheral. It’s the first major Marvel Games title to hit PlayStation 4 since the release of 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, which has racked up acclaim from both fans and critics. There’s no word on an exact release date for Iron Man VR, but look for it to arrive later in 2019.
