One of the comic book films to have an emotional roller coaster with its release date is the final X-Men film in the FOX-Marvel universe, The New Mutants. The story about 5 young mutants locked up in a shady facility has been a long time coming for moviegoers as the project has changed its release date in the last few years. While San Diego Comic-Con isn’t happening in the traditional sense, the convention is, fortunately, taking place virtually as Comic-Con@Home 2020.
With today being the first day of the convention, New Mutants had their panel online with director Josh Boone as well stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga joined moderator Ira Madison III to discuss the long-waited X-Men spinoff. The discussion began with Boone discussing what made him interested in adapting the group to the big screen. The horror element was something that was a major factor in getting him compelled to explore the New Mutants.
The cast members all spoke about getting to take on these iconic characters, explore the different relationships while also, jokingly, talking about how long it has taken to make this film as well as getting fans to see it. As a gift for the fans who have been waiting a very long time for this film, the opening minutes of New Mutants was shown as part of the panel. It starts with a flashback of a district being under attack during a massive storm. Danielle Moonstar’s father hides her and runs off to help his fellow citizens as Danielle runs into the woods before being knocked up. She wakes up inside the facility while chained to a bed, confused where she is.
A trailer is then shown focusing on all the teenagers as they try to find a way to escape their prison. But that is easier said than done as they are up against a powerful threat. When the panel cuts back to the panelists, they reveal that fans have a chance to attend a 10-minute fan-screening by tweeting #NewMutantsComicConAtHome and #NewMutantsScreeningSweepstakes
While a fake TV spot was floating around earlier this week that New Mutants would be coming to Disney+ in September, the panel ends with the team being hopeful that the August 28th release date sticks. Even though the release date is questionable, Boone referenced some features that will be part of the Blu-Ray and Digital Edition of the film, confirming that things are fully done for its home release. The Marvel Report will keep you updated with the latest on the film as more details come out and/or new changes are made for the release.
20th Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.
Josh Boone’s New Mutants, starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputina a.k.a. Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair a.k.a. Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie a.k.a. Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa a.k.a. Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar a.k.a. Mirage and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes is currently scheduled to hit theaters on August 28.
