Spider-Man 2 is fast approaching, and on October 20th, everyone will have a chance to dive back into the world Insomniac is building with the Spider-Men. Marvel’s Spider-Man sold over 33 million copies, and the trailers for Spider-Man 2 have been viewed over 75 million times just on the PlayStation YouTube channel alone. The anticipation for the sequel is at an all-time high.
One important character is returning after his grand introduction in Spider-Man on PS4 back in 2018. Of course, we are talking about Martin Li, aka Mister Negative. He plays a massive role in the first game, and he is back for Part 2. Stephen Oyoung performed as him so well, that I can’t wait to see what he brings in Spider-Man 2! Here is an excerpt of our interview and be sure to catch the full interview linked below!
Martin Li from Spider-Man 2
Did you know about the character beforehand or was this your first introduction to Martin Li aka Mister Negative?
The first introduction, had no idea, didn’t even know I was auditioning for Spider-Man. I knew we were at Sony’s motion capture studio in LA. It was very exciting, we knew it was a big video game, and that there was a villain. One of the descriptions was they wanted someone super suave but very dangerous. Also able who could switch between English & Mandarin/Chinese. For me, there was a lot of pressure already with lines, like ok don’t forget the lines when switching between the languages. Then also to be super cool, but also dangerous, but it was a lot of fun!
Stephen talks about the fan’s first reaction to seeing him in the first Spider-Man game!
I still remember when Mister Negative was announced in the trailer for the first game. I remember looking at comments saying “Who is this Asian guy in a suit?” right? We went to Hall H at Comic-Con, and they announced the cast, I came out “Stephen Oyoung, Mister Negative”. I’m telling you Hall H, 8,000 people, I’ll never forget it. Silence, like crickets because no one knew who Mister Negative was. Now, 6 years later Mr. Negative is a household name all thanks to this video game. It’s very cool to see that.
Without getting into spoilers, because we really don’t know your role in the second game. It’s interesting we have only seen a little bit of you in the second game marketing.
Yeah, well, number one, I thought it was super cool to be brought back. I did not expect that, I thought Martin would be locked up in the raft for the rest of eternity. So, yes to come back was amazing, I’m so grateful for that. Number two, his look! Super awesome, and again props to Jacinda Chew and everybody at Insomniac and the art director for making Mister Negative for making him look like he does now. With the long hair, and the beard. As far as the actual scope of the character, again that is a surprise. What isn’t a surprise is there is for sure a confrontation between Miles & Martin. A long time coming, Martin is responsible for the death of Miles’ father. What you see in the trailer really is going to give the fans what they want.
