The DC Power anthology has been a staple for the last couple of years, featuring an array of DC’s Black superheroes. This year’s 32-page one-shot is more focused on the fallout of the 2024 crossover event, Absolute Power.
The critically acclaimed Black History Month anthology returns on January 29 as DC Power: Rise of the Power Company. This book directly leads into The Power Company: Recharged coming out April 30.
Absolute Power saw Amanda Waller stripping metahumans of their powers, ending with most heroes getting their abilities back, but some came back not quite right. There’s also new metas popping up everywhere. More of this story is in the new and very good Black Lightning series.
According to DC, Rise of the Power Company will feature “Company Man,” a two-part prelude to The Power Company: Recharged, by Black Lightning writer Brandon Thomas, and art by Charles Stewart III, Anthony Fowler Jr., and Ulises Arreola.
After his brief cameo appearance in Black Lightning #3 (out on January 15), this one-shot reintroduces readers to Josiah Power: attorney, metahuman, and leader of the now-disbanded Power Company, a group of for-hire superheroes who made their first appearance in 2002’s JLA #61.
The anthology will feature some fan-favorite heroes dealing with the disinformation and metahuman mistrust that has grown amongst the human population since Waller’s meddling.
“Ring of Power,” written by Zipporah Smith with art by Kelsey Ramsay and Francesco Segala. Vixen and Bolt team up to battle anti-metahuman sentiment in a hospital where citizens are getting treated for emerging abilities.
A great mix of established veterans and newer heroes, the creative teams get to play with some fun dynamics here.
In April, The Power Company: Recharged follows Rise of the Power Company with an even more in-depth look at this reformed team. Written by Bryan Edward Hill and with art by Khary Randolph and Alitha Martinez, this new iteration of the Power Company will feature Josiah Power, Black Lightning, Batman (Jace Fox), the Signal, and Vixen.
The team will apparently be in Atlanta, working on rebuilding humanity’s trust and faith in heroes, while also combatting an increase in meta-hate. If this story feels super familiar, that’s because it uncomfortably reflects real life. They will also be working together to stop a metahuman serial killer.
DC Power: Rise of the Power Company will be available for purchase on January 29, with The Power Company: Recharged following up in April.
