DC Comics’ Valentine’s Day-themed anthology, “DC’s Supergirl Next Door #1,” released on January 28, 2026 featuring stories and art from C. R. C. Payne, Nicole Maines, Rosie Knight, Sarah Kuhn, Paulina Ganucheau, Sweeney Boo, and more. But our focus today is on Dorado Quick and his Jay Garrick story with art by Laura Braga.
Speed as a love language
“Running on Love” is a very sweet, thoughtful story that explores Jay Garrick’s long history through the lens of his wife, Joan, and their love for each other. One thing about the Garricks, they’re underrated by the Flash fandom as a whole. Wally West, Barry Allen, and their lightning rods, Linda Park and Iris West, tend to get more of a focus when it comes to romance and adventures.
Quick does a fantastic job taking readers through Jay’s past, showcasing how Joan has supported him through every step of the way. It’s a bittersweet story featuring how they were unable to have kids, Jay’s insecurities about being replaced, the eventual discovery of their daughter, Judy (a.k.a. The Boom), who Jay didn’t have any memory of, with it being set in a future where Joan has passed. Being able to handle all of that story in a few pages is incredibly impressive.
We got a chance to sit down and talk with Quick about his story and how his comic journey has been since we last talked about the Milestone Initiative’s New Talent Showcase. Check out the full interview below.
SHE’S A SMALL TOWN GIRL IN A SUPER-POWERED WORLD… AND SHE’S LOOKING FOR LOVE! There’s something about Kara. She’s effortlessly cool, adored by all, and looks great in a cape — she’s truly all that! She could have fifty first dates lined up in a minute, but love actually wasn’t on her radar… until now!
In this hot new anthology, join Supergirl and a host of lovestruck heroes and villains as they bravely embark on quests for love, even if it means running through every rom-com trope to get there. You’d be hard pressed to find ten things to hate about this book, so pick it up this Valentine’s Day — and place it on the shelf next to all the books you’ve loved before!
