Agents Of SHIELD Season 4 Surprises: Why You Should Catch Up Before April

SEASON FOUR’S TWISTS BLEW EVERYONE AWAY

The following section contains  SPOILERS for Agents of SHIELD season four.  If you don’t want to be spoiled ( and we don’t recommend it) scroll down to the end of the page as some of TMR’s best and brightest recount our favorite twist and turn moments from the season.

STILL HERE? SPOILER WARNING BELOW.

I have two! First, the beginning of the season’s twist with Ghost Rider’s main antagonist being his own uncle was a personal surprise.  I read the comics, and having Eli Morrow turn out to be the one behind the ghosts (yes, GHOSTS!) was shocking.  Everyone delivered unbelievable heartbreaking performances and it cemented Robbie Reyes (and by proxy Mr. Luna) as my Ghost Rider.  Everything from how he dealt with Mack to how he became who he was blew me away.  Mr. Bell’s episode in particular, The Good Samaritan, was a great retelling of the Ghost Rider mythos.  I’m still hopeful we’ll see Johnny Blaze (or Alexandra!) return as a mentor to Robbie’s Ghost Rider in the eventual spin off that has to be coming (#WeWantGhostRider everybody!)

The second twist was the most surprising.  After Ward was killed off in season 3 I didn’t expect Brett to return to the MCU and instead hoped he’d wait in the wings for a future Whedon project since I know they like to work with their friends.  Imagine my surprise that instead of Lincoln we found Grant Ward waiting in the wings.  It was a huge twist and I’m both excited and apprehensive to see what the future holds.  While Grant Ward is dead and this framework simulation never killed Rosalind Price, he’s a character that fans love to love and love to hate.  This is a character who never dropped Fitz in the ocean (how could he? Fitz is living the high life with a beautiful mysterious women!) and never betrayed ‘SHIELD’. Will he betray HYDRA to SHIELD since he’s a traitor? So many questions! I can’t wait to see what answers are in store.

Another incredible twist this season of Agents of SHIELD was the reveal that Melinda May had been replaced by an LMD. This worked on several levels, but first and foremost it was a genuinely shocking cliffhanger and natural turning point in the season. It also didn’t come out of nowhere, as the show subtly built up the warning signs around Aida and Radcliffe while also lulling audiences into a false sense of security. Perhaps the cherry on top, though, was the choice of May herself. She’s such a strong-willed force of nature that it’s hard to believe she could be taken down easily. The fact that she was upped the stakes for the second half of the season, not to mention that it broke our Philinda hearts by starting the ship in earnest when one of its members wasn’t even present.

While the ending was shocking, most unexpected for me was Fitz being an LMD. I was lulled into a false sense of security just like Simmons and figured they were both human.
