While The CW is currently the home for the Clark Kent version of Superman with Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman & Lois, HBO Max is bringing another Man of Steel to life on the WarnerMedia streaming service. One of the alternative takes that exist in the comics is Val Zod, who is the Earth-2 version of Superman, and if things go according to plan, he will be making his live-action debut in the near future. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Michael B. Jordan was attached to a Val-Zod project and now we’ve some major updates!
According to Deadline, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts scribes Darnell Metayer & Josh Peters have now been officially attached to the HBO Max drama as the writers. While Jordan is set to executive produce, it’s unclear at this point if he’ll be donning the iconic suit and cape. According to the trade, the writers have an “an unexpected take” on Val Zod. Here’s how HBO Max describes the project:
“Val Zod is the story of another Kryptonian with powers who hails from the same doomed planet as Superman. The hero is Black, and he finds refuge on Earth 2. Like the original Man of Steel, he is sheltered on his adopted planet but eventually in the comics is pitted against a brainwashed Superman.”
For Arrowverse viewers, it’s worth noting that while the synopsis mentions Val Zod being set on Earth-2, it doesn’t mean necessarily that it’ll be part of Stargirl’s world. Theoretically, the show may change the Earth designation or establish a new DC live-action Multiverse that is outside the one established in Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths.
