Booster Gold. In what is probably one of my most eagerly anticipated films, is the upcoming Booster Gold film. First reported by The Tracking Board, it is set to be a “buddy cop” team up between Booster Gold and Blue Beetle, and will be a bit of a departure from the more dark and grim side of the DC Extended Universe. DC TV super-producer, Greg Berlanti (Arrow, Supergirl) will be taking the reins on this film, not only as a producer, but as director as well. It has also been reported that Avengers and X-Men 2 writer, Zak Penn, will be penning the screenplay.
Back in August, Nathan Fillion stated that he would love to play Booster Gold in the movies. Shortly there after, Alan Tudyk (longtime friend of Fillion’s) came out and said that he would play Blue Beetle opposite of Nathan Fillion if he were to get the role. Would you like to see these two cast?
Teen Titans. Back in November, JoBlo — who also reported news of the possible villain in James Wan’s Aquaman movie — the 2020 Cyborg movie is “under consideration” to be retooled as a full on Teen Titans film. Ray Fisher is set to bring Vic Stone aka Cyborg to life later this year in Zack Snyder’s, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. If this film is in fact in the works, this could explain why there has been no movement on TNT’s Titans series. Fingers crossed that they go with the roster used in the early 2000’s cartoon from Cartoon Network.
Birds of Prey. After a failed television series, and various members of the all female ensemble popping up and starring in The CW’s, Arrow, Warner Bros. and DC Comics are rumored to also be mulling over the idea of a Birds of Prey film. Latino Review reported in November that Black Canary was slated to make her first appearance in one of the two upcoming Justice League movies, and that if her character is well received, DC plans to move ahead with a Birds of Prey movie.
Alona Tal (Supernatural) and Abby Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road) are the two rumored favorites to play Dinah. If we are getting Black Canary, Green Arrow can’t be far behind, right? It is also rumored that Jena Malone’s mystery role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is that of Barbara Gordon. Whether she is still Batgirl or now Oracle is unknown.
Legion of Superheroes. Word on this movie has been radio silent for almost a year now, but following the success of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, DC Comics seem to want to recapture the magic of that film. Outside of the film being pushed through with an Avengers – Meets – Guardians tag, nothing is known or even rumored about this film at the time.
Midnighter. This one is more speculation than rumor on my part, but it has been reported that diversity is a big thing for Warner Bros. when it comes to these movies. Under serious considerations at the studio is a gay superhero that will join the ranks of the other DCEU films. While no names were listed, the first that comes to mind would be Midnighter. There is also Alan Scott, so making an Earth-2 Justice Society movie could be something to consider as well.
Justice League Dark. The most active, in terms of news, of any movie on this list, is definitely this one here. Late last year, Guillermo del Toro had opted out of directing duties on this film, but would stay on as a producer. The Tracking Board later reported that Scott Rudin has come on as a producer and wants the film to shoot in early 2016 for a release in early to mid 2017.
We know that del Toro wanted Ron Perlman for the role of Swamp Thing and Warner Bros. seemed to have agreed. Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor have both been approached for the role of John Constantine. However, it is possible that the one that doesn’t get the role could fall back on Jason Blood aka Etrigan the Demon. Warner’s do want Deadman to be the comedic presence of the team, while Hispanic & black actresses are being looked at for Zatanna. Finally Monica Belluci looks to be the top choice to play Madame Xandu.
The film has no director yet, but depending on who the studio does nab to helm this epic, Ben Mendelsohn may sign on to play Arcane, according to Heroic Hollywood. He has been approached and seems to be down for the part, but it is all contingent on who directs. This would mark Mendelsohn’s second time appearing in a DC Comics films, as he played John Daget in The Dark Knight Rises.
In addition to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. is currently scheduled to release Suicide Squad on August 5, 2016, then Wonder Woman on June 23, 2017, The Justice League Part One on November 17, 2017, The Flash on March 23, 2018, Aquaman on July 27, 2018, Shazam! on April 5, 2019, Justice League Part Two on June 14, 2019, Cyborg on April 3, 2020, and finally Green Lantern Corps on June 19, 2020. It has been confirmed that a stand-alone Superman and Batman movie are in the works, but have not been given release dates as of yet.
