Marvel Unlimited has announced their March 2017 lineup of comics to be added to their subscription-based comic service. For the uninitiated, Marvel Unlimited is a subscription-based service that allows users to read over 17,000+ titles and adds new titles weekly. The service isn’t just for reading random comics, as it allows users to search by series, creator, arcs, characters, and more. Many series offer the full run in digital form and Marvel has been adding their newer comics, albeit at a much, much slower pace.
If you’ve never toyed around Marvel Unlimited, I couldn’t recommend the service enough. I still pick up hard copies of comics I know that I want to own and collect, but there’s something to be said for being able to sit back and read the entire first couple of runs featuring the Inhumans or the fact that I can read all of Civil War in order and utilizing a feature known as Smart Panel, which is frankly the only way I like reading comics now.
Smart Panel moves the reader from panel to panel without showing everything else. It allows the read to retain an element of surprise whereas in the past you’d open a page, unintentionally look at the one next to it, and potentially spoil something unexpected. Smart Panel prevents that and allows the reader to see a detailed version of that panel, which only serves as a tool to highlight the artwork of the comic and amplifies the size of the lettering, for those pesky, hard-to-read issues that put dark lettering on dark panels.
We live in the age of digital subscriptions and everything is $9.99. Marvel Unlimited is already proven its worth to me, but someone more well-read than I might find it lacking in material they haven’t read. How a service holds up over time depends on how each individual views their experience, but my experience with Marvel Unlimited has been pleasant. It’s a solid lineup of new titles and keeps the flow of Civil War II comics that were previously all available under arcs not too terribly long ago. As always with Marvel, the aim is to keep the die-hards but find a way to attract new customers with little or no previous experience in the comic world.
