DICE 2017: Marvel Game Developers Will Get ‘Freedom to Tell Their Story’

Marvel Games Creative Director Bill Rosemann has told IGN at DICE 2017 that upcoming video games based on Marvel’s licenses will not be restricted by existing canon. The games, while set in the comic or cinematic worlds, will venture off and tell their own tales of Marvel’s iconic characters.

“We want to give [developers] freedom to tell their story and we want to make it an original story,” Rosemann said. “We want to give our partners…freedom to look at all of Marvel history and to pick from what interests them. It’s a bit like we’re saying, ‘Hey you’re the chef, you’re going to make this meal. Here’s all of the ingredients. You pick the ingredients that you like and make a new meal.”

Rosemann also notes that Marvel is aiming for quality with each game released. With that goal in mind, Marvel will not pressure developers to fit their games into a particular plot or force a game to be finished in time for a coinciding movie release.

Upcoming games centered around Marvel characters include the Avengers project with publisher Square Enix, Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series from The Walking Dead developer Telltale Games, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite from Capcom, and an untitled Spider-Man project from Ratchet & Clank creators Insomniac Games.
